Solution for Error 678- Fix it

According to Microsoft, error 678 mostly occurs in Windows XP service pack 2 users. The cause is very vague and almost unknown. Some say its because of faulty modem-computer interaction, some say its due to pure computer problem. I use BSNL DataOne broadband service as it is one of the most trusted broadband providers in India. It is very fast and reliable. But, few days back, I started getting 'error 678' and I could not login. The error message says "Error 678: The remote computer did not respond". I called to almost all the related officials at BSNL broadband office. Even they responded well and did everything they could to help me out. But no one actually knew what the problem was.

They had my computer, modem, username and password checked. My modem worked well- It connects to the internet with other accounts. My computer was in perfect condition too. My computer connected to the net with other Internet service providers on the same modem. It became almost impossible to figure out what the reason for this error was. Assistant engineers at the BSNL office were assisting me to get the connection back. But in vain. At last, a senior Engineer suggested doubtfully to change the port and check again. So the Assistant engineer who was working on this at the BSNL exchange, shifted the port and my account connected fantastically. I brought the modem back and connected to my computer and logged o with my username and password and it connected very well.
So the etiology for this problem is unknown but the solution is to change the port. So, if you tried all possible solutions which Microsoft suggested to fix Error 678 and if none of them worked then ask your service providers to change the port.

No security to Privacy and Identity on the net

No am not talking about hacking am not at all talking about porn sites or low grade sites. I am talking about Yahoo! and Google.

According to a report by a consortium of telecoms and finance companies, including BT, Yahoo and Lloyds TSB, 8% of internet users have been victims of online fraud. Almost double that proportion know someone who has been targeted by criminals through their computers.

In the year 2003, a Chinese pro-democratic activist, Wang Xiaoning was arrested by the police with the help of his private information that Yahoo provided the police. Wang had been using an anonymous e-mail account to participate in a Yahoo Group to disseminate his political views. He advocated open elections, a multi-party system, and separation of powers within the government. In addition, he called the Chinese government despotic.

Google was thought to be very strict and protective in regard to the identity and private details of its users until recently, when three software professionals were arrested by the Pune police with the help of Google India.co. Google traced the telephone number that was indexing the profiles of these people and supplied this information to Cyber crime officials of Pune. All these guys did was they used bad language against a king named Shivaji who used to live centuries ago. This was surely bad behavior but the question here is 'Do they deserve to get arrested?' A Warning from the Google or account removal would have been enough punishment.

Lets put aside freedom of speech and expression and concentrate on the privacy and identity threat onliners are facing. This is indeed an ethical break down on the part of these online service providers. Another example of forgotten ethics by Yahoo is the recent removal of Iran from its list of world countries in its sign up page. Where does the fault lie? Is it with the officials working in the gain companies or is it that the companies should revive and tighten their privacy policy?

Dont Cross 15!!

Never send more than 15 messages at MyBlogLog or else you will land yourself in an extremely embarrassing situation. This is the 'decent' message which you would be facing in case you cross the limit of 15- Message:* Now just slow down there, rock star! It appears you've become a bit overzealous with your messaging. Remember, you are only allowed to send 15 messages per day. No sweat though, you can start sending messages again tomorrow.

Go on, get some fresh air, enjoy the great outdoors!

To my surprise and horror I found this extremely uneasy and unconfortable message from MyBlogLog server. This does not suit a site like MyBloglog to act so irresponsibly.

Browsers other than Explorer

More than 80% of Internet users use Microsoft Internet explorer. This is not entirely because of the good will explorer has among the users. Most of them do no know that there are alternatives to explorer. This fact has been revealed in many studies.
Let’s see some alternatives.

  • FireFox: This is well known as the browser of explorer haters. It took its origin and developed in the open source revolution. It is a strong competitor of Internet explorer. In 1994, Netscape navigator came into origin. It gave a strong competition to Internet explorer. In late 1990s, Internet explorer erased its presence and claimed itself as the leader. But in later years, with the help of open source, Netscape came back as FireFox. From that day, the number of FireFox admirers is growing every year. It has got good name in protection against spamming and fishing. Now its a Google product. It is well known for its privacy and security features. FireFox can be freely downloaded from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
  • Apple Safari: Safari created waves in the field of web browsing. All these days, it was used in Macs and apple ipods. Recently Safari version 3 has been introduced into windows. 1. it’s 2 times faster than Internet explorer 7 and 1.6 times faster than FireFox. 2.Snap back- when you have gone too far browsing your way deep and do not actually remember where u started, this will take you back to the place where you started the entire browse. 3. Private browsing- if u chose this option, your browsing history and details will not be stored. You need not clear ‘cache’ addresses if you use this option. You can download Safari browser at www.apple.com/safari/download.
  • Opera: this was created by Telenor in 1994 in Norway. Present version 9 can follow your oral commands. It can also read out the text documents on the computer for you. It can translate the selected text into 12 languages in a click. It shows the live thumbnails of your favorite web pages. It can download large sized multimedia files very easily. It gives efficient protection against viruses. In addition, it allows you to customize your window as you like. Opera can be downloaded from http://www.opera.com/download/
  • Flock: Flock was designed for the development of web 2.0. it was developed on October 2005 by a group of American developers. It can be downloaded from www.flock.com/download

Vodafone adds Google Maps

Vodafone has joined hands with Google to develop and provide 'Maps' to their clients. These maps have the potential to gain huge revenue if local ads are placed along with the results. These maps are not only going to be popular but also addictive because people would use them to locate famous shopping malls, holiday spots, medical shop, book stalls etc through these maps.In some places like Japan, people use their mobiles to organise important business trnasactions and meetings through these mobile search locators.Google maps on mobiles have a large revenue erning potential if Google Ads are Indexed beside the maps.

Yahoo has already introduced advertising on its mobile-specific Web sites display advertising on its mobile-specific Web sites in 19 countries in the Americas, Europe and Asia. The move, which follows a year of aggressive expansion in the wireless space, marks Yahoo's first formal rollout of graphical ads on its sites around the world.

Recent Microsoft mobile 6.0, then Google's and Yahoo! 's interest in mobile industry shows that Internet is no more pertained to computers and to those who are computer professionals.

YouTube Story

Chad Hurley and Steve Chen, the YouTube founders became millionaires overnight after Google bought the video sharing site last November.

Chen and met Hurley in 1999, while working at PayPal, three years before the online financial transaction service was bought by Internet auction site eBay for 1.5 billion dollars.Hurley left PayPal to work for himself as a consultant. Chen remained at PayPal and worked on the company's expansion into China.

The friends first discussed wanting an easy way to share home videos online while at a dinner with other former PayPal employees in February 2005.
Hurley, Chen and former PayPal colleague Jawed Karim launched YouTube in April 2005.

Google bought YouTube in November in a 1.65-billion-dollar stock deal that marked the search engine's most expensive acquisition and crowned the young start-up an enviable success story.
YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley received 694,087 shares, valued at nearly 328 million dollars on Thursday. Hurley got another 41,242 shares of Google stock, valued at 19.5 million dollars, which were placed in a trust fund.

YouTube co-founder Steve Chen received 625,366 shares valued at 295.5 million dollars and another 68,721 shares worth 32.47 million dollars that were placed in a trust fund, according to the US Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
Google's third founder, Jawed Karim, received 137,443 shares of Google stock with a market value of 64.9 million dollars.

Sequoia Capital, which financed YouTube to the tune of 11.5 million dollars, got a payoff of 941,027 shares worth 444.64 million dollars, the SEC filing indicated.

Google, the supreme search engine, indexes videos from the top video sharing site,YouTube. Thus they enhanced each others efficiency.

Google - Expanding Gmail

Google has made its Gmail e-mail service more widely available. The company has now removed the 'invitation only' restrictions on its Gmail service in several regions including European countries, Middle East, Africa and Brazil.

The service has been already open to all in several other parts of the world, including Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and Egypt since quite some time.
Google also said that the restrictions (invitations) would be removed in other markets pretty soon.

Though Gmail is far behind Yahoo! and MSN in e-mail services,Gmail has its own fans (most of them are Google search fans or Blogger fans) Gmail has to improve a lot to be able to compete with Yahoo! and MSN in e-mail service market. One of the main accusation is that Gmail is that user privacy is at stake because of Gmail. This is mainly attributed to the fact that Gmail scans all the mails to be able to put up relevant Ads beside the mail. But Google's says that 'The Ad program is to enhance the services' they provide to the users. And that they 'take user privacy very seriously'

Yahoo! Pipes

Yahoo has released their new Web 2.0 style RSS mashup tool, called Pipes on Wednesday. It's pretty enjoyable to look at: drag around various boxes and hook them together with 'pipes'. The boxes rip data from around the web ( from anywhere you choose) and process it, spitting out an RSS feed at the other end. This mashup tool gets you RSS feeds of 'anything' that you are interested in right on your desktop. Some authors also call it as 'RSS Remixer'.

'Pipes' recieved an unexpectedly warm and huge welcome as we can see in the words of Yahoo! team. This was their (Yahoo team's) response to WebPro news :
“Wow! We were hoping to have a low key release of Pipes, and we’ve gotten more attention than we could have ever dreamed. Thanks to Tim O’Reilly who called it a “milestone in the history of the internet” but our goal was really just to get developers to test it, play with it, and give us feedback. Now, we need to take the site down to increase capacity. Our pipes, are, so to speak, clogged.”
Find more information on this topic at WebPro News.

The pipes site is down due to excited webmasters rushed to get their own Yahoo! pipe.It says "Our Pipes are clogged! We've called the plumbers!"
At 7:20 Pacific time on Thursday, Yahoo blogger Jeremy Zawodny updated his blog on Pipes."Pipes is currently down. There's a lot of interest, so things are getting tweaked on the backend. I'll post more when we have an update."

Google Search Engine - Not a bot anymore

Google is successful from time and again to give its search engines all the requirements which can turn it live.Google search engine is not a bot anymore. It has gone too far from naming it as an 'engine' or 'robot'.It behaves just like a human being. If you are thinking why? and how? , Take a look at these self explanatory points -

  • Ignoring Meta tags - Google search now ignores meta tags completely because of their over-usage by webmasters.
  • Checking Keyword density in the page - Google search engine ignores pages in which keywords have been packed densely (just to attract the search engine). This is to stop the growing number of 'keyword spammers' who want to attract Google search engine with the large quantity of keywords in their pages.
  • Checking English and grammar - Google prefers to index pages which have well formed sentences with good grammar to ill organised pages.
  • Ignoring Duplicates - Duplicate site content is not only ignored but infact given a negative ranking (just like link spam) by the search engine.Duplicate content may be a content which is repeatedly posted in the same site or content posted in a site from another site.
  • Checking Link spam - Google has made its search engine immune to link spammers.Link farms which contain a bulk of link lists are just ignored by Google.Google looks at the exact location where the link is placed and the content preceding and following the link.
  • Search History - Google has recently made 'personalised search' as default. This enables Google to maintain your search history and record your web activities. On one hand Google wants to provide its users better and user friendly search results and on the other hand,it can trace your search history and start ignoring your tricks and tactics to optimise your site to Google search.

An article by John Fowler from searchenginecollege.com -

If I write half a page
and you write thirty four
I can use three keywords
whilst you get forty more
I can be brief and concise
and speedily spit pages out
but your one and only masterpiece
Carries far more clout,
I am but a comic strip
to your Tolstoyan drama
I am all wild excitement
whilst you are perfect karma,
I have few words to play with
to juggle in a subtle key
whilst you have an epic
to aid keyword density
the old bull takes his time
never rushing, always serene
he has created multiple options
whilst young bull was over keen,
so when you code your pages
don't undersell your wording
or you'll be virtually alone
when you should be herding,
ten keywords in a thousand
dilutes the trend to oversell
and makes the reader relax
from the instinct he can tell
that a little page is but a ploy
to put him onto a sales hook,
whereas an interesting article
is worth a second look.

Click - Google's recommendations about SEO.It is clear that Google wants to Index 'clean' and 'fair' sites and that it would not tolerate spammers manupilating the search engine for better ranks. So SEO is becoming a hard task day by day. While Social media optimization is as free and simple as it has always been.

HinKhoj - Hindi Search Engine

A Hindi (Indian national language) search engine has been launched by a software engineer from the prestigious IIT (Indian Institute of Technology). This site is entirely hindi based.Unlike other Indian search engines, hinkhoj is completely based on hindi literature. Its a good news for people who blog or wish to blog in hindi and of course for hindi lovers.HinKhoj is now in its beta phase.
This button Search in Hindi carries the link to hinkhoj.com.

Now Hinkhoj also provides a Hindi-English dictionary. You can toggle between hindi and english languages by pressing F12 key. This dictionary is very interesting as it also provides the user wtih goole search results of the inquired word.
Though Indian people on the net mostly deal with english on the net (unlike Chinese people) , lets hope that Hinkhoj makes its mark just like Baidu.

When did Google last visit my site?

To know when Google last visited your site and what all information Google has stored up about your site pages, just follow these steps

  • Go to Google.com main page
  • Enter info:your site name.com (don't type www or http://)
  • Click search and Google will show you what all information it has got regarding your site.
  • Click on 'Google's Cache' , it will show you the Google's snap shot of your site and when did Google visited your site the last time.
  • Other information you can find - Pages that link to your site,Pages that are similar to your site, web pages from your site, sites which contain your site's URL.

By this, you can know how often Google search engine has indexed your site.If Google visited your page recently and frequently,it means that Google search engine finds your site friendly enough. If Google has not crawled up your site for quite a long time, then try to improve your link popularity, introduce your site to like minded people and increase the visibility of your site in social networking places.

Google personalised search

When we create an account at Google accounts,we see the following statement below the re-enter password box saying
"Creating a Google Account will enable Search History. Search History is a feature that will provide you with a more personalized experience on Google that includes more relevant search results and recommendations. Learn More "

This is a great service but at the cost of your privacy.Google stores your search history and data along with your Name, account details. If you don't mind your search history being stored, you will find this a wonderful service. But if you think the other way,you would feel that Google is being unfair.Google has a solution for this problem too.Go to This page and click on "Pause Settings".This option will stop Google from recording your search history unless and until you change the option to 'Resume settings'.
Also while signing up at Google accounts, don't forget to 'uncheck' the Enable 'Search History' box if you don't want your search history to be recorded.

Rank My Blog

A few minutes ago I found another social networking site www.rankmyblog.net .The idea is naive and the site is more user friendly.'Add this link to' ,'Discuss' and 'Track back link' features appear to be very useful.

But there are few negatives which i noticed ...
1.There is a some problem with loading of the site content.
2.The sitemeter bar which blocks the view.
3.Tags are limited in number.
4.The syndications are limited in the 'Add to link' tag.
5.The huge amount of empty space that appears in the middle of the page.

If you can overlook these drawbacks, you will find the site well organised, user friendly with many innovative features (though appears to be a combination of Mybloglog, digg etc).We can see few blogs have already registered themselves including the famous techCrunch which has got 4 votes at present.I have registered my blog with head eMarketing A to Z and waiting for votes.I think Improving the site will surely make it a big hit.

JetBrowse

Jetbrowse : is a new software launched in India by Vivek Gupta, owner of 'Enhansol' company that owns and markets 'jetbrowse'.It has been a success so far.It has no online money transfer facility as for now,yet it has made thousands of subscribers.Soon Enhansol is about to release an antivirus software.Jetbrowse is an easy option for Indians. For more details about jetbrowse please contact sales@jetbrowse.com
How it works :
Unlike some alternative solutions, jetbrowse's compression algorithm increases speed with only minimal change in the quality of the images. And this software has proven more reliable.
What's more, acceleration isn't the only benefit - JetBrowse's products also enhance the user's experience in several other ways.
More and more dial-up users are coming to expect this enhanced level of performance. Its service has been enthusiastically accepted on a prepaid subscription basis by hundreds of thousands of customers. And its service has been acclaimed by industry authorities such as the New York Times and PC World.
JetBrowse Accelerator is recommended to dial up, ISDN, wireless and DSL Internet with line speed up to 384kbps.

The JetBrowse web Accelerator utilizes the client-server approach to achieve up to 6x acceleration ratios for web content and email. JetBrowse Acceleration Server compresses web pages, images, animations, documents and HTTP headers, applying a vast array of mostly proprietary compression algorithms. Each data type is compressed using the compression scheme, optimal for this data type. For example, HTML pages can be compressed to less than 2% of the original size. This is 50:1 compression ratio. Already compressed JPEG and GIF images can be further compressed by up to 12x !

JetBrowse Accelerator is the only product that accelerates FTP downloads and NNTP, as well as web browsing (HTTP) and email (POP3, SMTP, IMAP).

Internet to Revolutionize TV - Bill Gates

DAVOS (Switzerland), Jan 28 (2 hours ago) : The Internet is set to revolutionise television within five years, due to an explosion of online video content and the merging of PCs and TV sets, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates said today.

In his own words ''I'm stunned how people aren't seeing that with TV, in five years from now, people will laugh at what we've had,'' ''Certain things like elections or the Olympics really point out how TV is terrible. You have to wait for the guy to talk about the thing you care about or you miss the event and want to go back and see it,'' ''Internet presentation of these things is vastly superior.'' "''Because TV is moving into being delivered over the Internet -- and some of the big phone companies are building up the infrastructure for that -- you're going to have that experience all together,''

What does this news has to do with Internet marketing? I'll tell you.Shifting of viewers from TVs to Internet means Shifting of advertisements from TVs to Internet. This shows that webmasters have a vast future as marketers and advertisers.Everybody knows that no one watches the irritating TV ads which interrupt our favorite shows. We just change the channel and watch some other show (other than ads) till the ads are gone. This is something like being unfair to the advertisers (ofcourse viewers also).

On the other hand,Internet Advertising is fair on both sides. The ads are targeted and provided to the people who really want them.People who don't want them are not annoyed by forcing them to view the Ads.This logical realisation of many companies has already caused a tremendous shift of advertising and marketing campaigns from TVs to Internet.

YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley said the impact on advertising would be profound, with the future promising far more targeted ads tailored to each viewer's profile. ''In the coming months we're going to do experiments to see how people interact with these ads to build an effective model that works for advertisers and works for users,'' he says. This clearly shows the bright future of Internet Entrepreneurs who are planning to establish Marketing and Advertising campaigns on the Internet. So All the best and hurry guys!

Social Media Optimisation (SMO)

Whats this?Is this some new technology or technique for optimising our blogs? Of course not.It contains everything we did and are doing routinely. This was a logically coined term by Rohit Bhargava who is the Vice President for Interactive Marketing with Ogilvy Public Relations. He did not invent Social Media Optimisation but yes he gave it a special status.Search engines are not the only means of getting traffic.Rather these days, social media places are dominating Search Engines. For clear understanding,I will show you various Social Media networks

  • MyBlogLog
  • Digg
  • Reddit
  • Orkut
  • StumbleUpon
  • YouTube
  • Friendster
  • Feed readers and Syndications

Anything which takes you into the public, developing relations with them is Social media Optimisation. In short, any networking place which can show your site to its members is Social Media. It lets the people know what your site is about, share their ideas and views.Social Media Optimisation is easier and quicker than SEO.If you are able to establish yourself as a recognised member at any two or three of these Social Media and networking places, you can resign the job of getting traffic to your site.So unless you are crazy about Google page rank and enjoy seeing your blog at Google search listings (like myself),you may stop worrying about SEO and start concentrating at providing quality posts and good relations at network places.Actually, Google page ranking does not matter that much these days (will have another post on this) as it used to be once. What matters more is how much traffic you are able to generate. No one cares where it is comming from.

Take a look at Rohit's 5 rules of SMO.Do you think he is (or even I am) saying something new? But by coining the term SMO,he definitely was able to show people the importance of social networking and bookmarking and that search engines are not the only means of generating traffic. This made people take a serious look at sources 'other' than search engines to generate traffic.

Baidu - Google of China

Google is the top search engine world wide, except in China. It derives its name from an old Chinese poem by Song Dynasty. In Chinese,Baidu means 'hundreds of times'.The name is apt for a search engine because people use it again and again i.e hundreds of times.
This is yet another example which explains the importance of estimating the market.Google is facing serious problems in China.

  • First , Chinese language is too complex and the local company, Baidu naturally knows its people better than Google. Moreover people of China consider Google as a foreign search engine.People use Google and Yahoo only for foreign information.Revenue in China's search-engine market topped $53 million in the third quarter of 2006,Baidu's share was $30 million, exceeded the combined revenues of Google and Yahoo in China.
  • Second problem Google has got is with the heavy government censorship in China.
  • Thirdly, the delayed arrival of Google (or early success of Baidu) in China is also being considered as one of the reasons for the failure of Google in China.

Another similar example is the severe competition Honda and Yamaha are facing with Home based two wheeler company,Bajaj. In spite of superior equipment and latest technology, giants like Google,Honda,Yamaha are thriving to survive in these regions. This shows the importance of market estimation and marketing strategies in the success of a product or company.

Profile-Social Networking-SEO

Does profile info has anything to do with number of visitors to a site? Surely it has a lot to do.An attractive profile info and a good landing page of the site play very important role in attracting visitors.

This is the reason for the success of MyBlogLog,Orkut and myspace which give lot of importance to profile.MyBlogLog is the talk of the day and is working fantastic. It more or less appears like combination of Orkut and technorati. It allows viewers know who are the recent readers of the site.when they click the pic,it lands into his profile at mybloglog from where readers can enter his website thus making it completely viral networking.Even Blogger 'strongly recommends' to allow readers to view your profile.

The display pic and few poinst about yourself give the reader a sense that these posts are from a human and that you are just like anyother human being.First impression is very important and you can't get the first impression again.A good and decent profile info helps a lot in establishing reader relation with the site.Profile does help you a lot in social networking which can help you in link exchange and SEO.

Free Traffic Vs Paid Traffic

Traffic coming to a site can be divided broadly into

  • Free Traffic - Traffic from Search Engines and networking sites.
  • Paid Traffic - Traffic from paid advertising programs and other softwares.
For real and longstanding results, free traffic is more preferable.Because this kind of traffic comes from people who want your content or products or have similar ideas as you do and want to share the information. These people won't mind to come back to your site (if your content is good) time and again to read your posts.
Paid traffic on the other hand, comes from people who are forced to see your pages.Your pages go to them, they don't come to your pages.Of course if your site is smart enough, they would not mind bookmarking it.But this happens rarely because people hardly read unexpected sites which come before them like pop ups and pop unders etc.Even if they bookmark your site for the moment,it is unlikely that they would take a serious second look at your site.

Free Traffic can be further categorised as
  • Referral Traffic - Traffic generated from Social networking sites like Mybloglog, technorati.
  • Traffic from Search Engines.
  • Traffic generated from Link exchange.
Referral traffic is constant but Search Engine traffic is more diverse and can expose your site to more visitors. But if your site is not there in top 10 pages of the search engine results,it is impossible that you get traffic from the search engine. So you should tune your site friendly enough to search engine so that it can find you out easily. This method is what is called SEO.
Search engines run automated programs, called “bots” or “spiders” that visit websites from all over the internet and gather information regarding web pages that are searched by the people. This is otherwise known as having your website crawled.
After crawling the WebPages on your site, the gathered content is stored in a huge searchable database of documents which make up the search engine’s “index”. The search engine arranges this information in various searchable fields, so that when a queried the search engine can scan billions of documents and completes this in fractions of a second.
To make your pages search engine friendly, you have to
  1. Tone your keywords and smart usage of keywords.
  2. Interlinking of pages of your site.
  3. Toning the Meta tags - though it is said that meta tags are dead, some search engines still use meta tags and meta tags are of great help for social book marking and networking.

Link Exchange is a very good means for generating serious readers only if the exchange takes place organically and not through softwares or by thrid parties.Exchanging links from similar sites as yours brings people who are actually interested in your site. These people in no time form your inner circle of readers.Once relationship is established between readers,it is easy to publicise your site.

Microsoft's AdCenter

Microsoft has launched adCenter where advertisers can place their ads at targeted sites.A new release of adCenter is expected in the next 2 months, with many of the new features resulting from testing and customer feedback collected through adLabs.

Silient features of adCenter are

  • Advertisers can see when the clicks (on their Ads) lead to sales.
  • Ads can be targeted to places and constumers of the advertisers' choice.
  • Built in tool to get keywords.
  • Detail reports of Ads to the advertisers.
  • Chose your own price for your Ads.
  • Pay only when the Ads are clicked.(the last two are same as any other advertising service)
Keyword service platform :
Keyword optimization efforts are built upon the Keyword Service Platform (KSP), a set of services that third-party developers can use through APIs to build Web applications to analyze keywords.
Product manager James Colborn says "We're making it an open network by publishing and sharing the algorithm" "We're excited to see how our partners will build on the KSP."
This feature gives adCenter a clear competitive advantage over Google and Yahoo.

Microsoft also previewed video hyperlink technology, which will allow marketers to create ad links on products shown in videos. The company said it will make that technology available on MSN starting in the spring.

Colborn also said "For now, Microsoft is testing the feature on Microsoft's network of sites, but the company plans to extend it to other publishers"

While Microsoft has an advantage over its competitors through KSP,MSN is suffering from low search engine popularity and search engine users. This poses a great threat to adCenter because search engine indexing plays very important role in targeting traffic to its Ads.This is one of the main reasons for the success of Google.
comScore reported that MSN garnered just 10.5% of search traffic, compared to Google's 47.3% and Yahoo's 28.5%. This clearly shows that MSN is lagging behind in the race and will have to take lot of pains inorder to compete with Google and Yahoo.

Yahoo! Publishing network - In Beta

Yahoo Publishing network (YPN) is in beta phase.Yahoo announced that it is taking a very limited number of new publishers at present but hopefully,YPN will be available to general public once the beta testing is completed.

To maximize your chances for approval (as per YPN)

Certainly it is a dissappointing news for larger number of overseas publishers who are waiting for YPN.But once YPN is launched to the public, everyone eligible can have it.On the other hand,Yahoo which announced that its profits have gone down by 61% when compared to last year, expects Panama and YPN to save the day.

Nofollow to Check Link Spam

Google Introduced 'Nofollow', a special tag system.
Due to the burst of blogs and eMarketers, comments span, link spam has been increasing.People leave comments and their links as comments or somehow manage to add their site link at other sites. This has created a nuisance in the blogosphere.

This is what Google says : If you're a blogger (or a blog reader), you're painfully familiar with people who try to raise their own websites' search engine rankings by submitting linked blog comments like "Visit my discount pharmaceuticals site." This is called comment spam, we don't like it either, and we've been testing a new tag that blocks it. From now on, when Google sees the attribute (rel="nofollow") on hyperlinks, those links won't get any credit when we rank websites in our search results. This isn't a negative vote for the site where the comment was posted; it's just a way to make sure that spammers get no benefit from abusing public areas like blog comments, trackbacks, and referrer lists

Msn search and Yahoo have given their support to Google in this regard. Many sofware companies have already come up and engaged themselves with Google in building the nofollow software.Once the software is uploaded, all the links in the comments (links which appear after 'posted by') will include the 'nofollow' tag, that means all those links would be useless ( to the author and to the commenters).

Wikipedia is going to be affected a lot by this 'Nofollow' tag.Because Wikepedia is built by innumerable people whose took lot of pain to nourish it all these days. Now their links would be left out, their links would only have an importance of a 'wikipedia' inbound link, losing their individuality. It may lose its reputation and the number of interested authors at wikipedia would dramatically fall down.
Nofollow also has some good news for wikepedia.Wikipedia is the largest target of Link spam.Though it disagreed to 'nofollow' in the beginning, now it has accepted to adopt nofollow. But most of the SEO gurus are optimistic that wikipedia would develop another software for itself in near future in order to save its authors.

While thats the case with Wikipedia, even bloggers have their own share of bad news.Nofollow would not only check comment spam but also legitimate links which are supposed to improve their page rank.It is being considered as a double endged knife by SEO experts. For Bloggers, only a few bloggers are going to get benefited from this 'nofollow' because those who get comment and link spams must be daily users of the internet and the only reason why they keep the comments in their page is to increase their page rank.Removing a few comments a day wont be a big problem for daily users.

On the whole, there is going to be a dramtic and sudden change in SEO because of 'nofollow'

Go Ping your Blog

Each time a new post is posted in your blog,it is automatically pinged to various Blog ping servers (like weblogs, technorati etc). This lets the blogosphere know that there is some new content in your blog. This refreshes your blog in the internet and lets people know about the new information in your blog. Most of the 'ping servers' allow automatic pinging to them just by placing a html code or java script in our template html.

We can also ping the blogs mannually. Most of the servers ask for the blog URL and the site feed URL .If you have no idea what your blog feed URL is, get your blogs' feed URL from feedburner.com.Now you are ready to ping your blog.

There are few sites which let you ping your site to various ping servers at at time.
Following are a few sites which provide you with various ping servers at a place -

Meta tags

Meta tags are special HTML elements which increase your site visibility.Recently,it is said that meta tags are dead and that they are of no use.But still a large group of web masters do believe that meta tags significantly increase search engine visibility of websites.
Meta tags are more useful in social bookmarking though they might have lost their impotance in SEO.

You can find many Meta tag Generators available on net for free.Create your meta tags in one of these sites which build you your site's meta tags and copy paste the code in your template html.
If you are a Blogger(like me), am sure you would get this 'error' message when you try to save your meta tags in your template - Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly. XML error message: The element type "meta" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "". This is because Blogger uses XHTML and not just HTML.You need to terminate each line starting with "meta" with />.

Example - [meta name="whatever" content="good"/] This is how each line starting with "meta" should end.
Note: In the above example,Replace the parenthesis - [ ] with < > (so each line should end with />)

Adsense Insecurity / Flaws in adsense

Adsense has made few changes in its policy.
According to the new policy,

  • 'Ads (whether contextual or non - contextual) which may resemble Adsense Ads' are not allowed in the same page containing Adsense Ads anymore.
  • Up to two referral units (previously four) from each referral product or offering may be displayed on a page, in addition to the ad units, search boxes, and link units specified above
  • AdSense for search results pages may show only a single ad link unit in addition to the ads Google serves with the search results. No other ads may be displayed on your search results page.
  • In order to prevent user confusion, we do not permit Google ads or search boxes to be published on websites that also contain other ads or services formatted to use the same layout and colors as the Google ads or search boxes on that site. Although you may sell ads directly on your site, it is your responsibility to ensure these ads cannot be confused with Google ads.

A few flaws in Adsense which affects a lay publisher

  • Why can't Adsense block or 'Ignore' clicks from the publishers' own IP and count the clicks from other IPs.
  • If some Adsense competitor generates clicks on adsense Ads of a site with a software, the only person who will be at loss is the publisher.
  • What about all the advertising the Publisher did all these days before his account was disabled?
  • Suppose X is Y's enemy and Y is an adsense publisher,X would keep clicking on Y's Ads and get his Adsense account disabled. That doesn't mean that 'all' the clicks are generated from Y alone. What about the clicks which X's friends and contacts produced?
  • Adsense cares more about Google publicity than Adwords bidder or Adsense publisher
  • In order to be a market leader,Adsense is trying to create a fear in Adsense publishers with its senseless policies.
  • Getting a second chance from Adsense is worse than begging.

By changing its policies,Adsense has made it clear that it is feeling insecure. And Google sponsors Ads of Adsense and Adwords - it means Google is getting defensive.Adsense seems to be profitable only to Google and a few (very few) publishers.

The insecurity is not limited to Google. The publishers are the real sufferers of this 'Adsense Insecurity'.Most of the times, the publisher is unaware of which policy he is actually violating. The reasons for deleting the account are too broad and vast that the publisher can not figure out what his mistake actually is.

Earning through Internet - Simple and Easy?

Ofcourse not.
There are many websites which say 'Earn 2000$ in two weeks, just spend 30 mins hours a day'.
Thats not true.To reach that state, one has to work hard, sharpen his talents and update himself with creative ways regularly.
Nothing can be achieved without hard work.Someone might be earning 2000$ per week or in two weeks. But we never try to look at his/her struggle before he/she got there, nor he/she tells us.
Like I read in Divya's Blog, for me,every site appears to be forcing me(to view, comment, sign up their sites) or trying to make a fool of me.
Infact most of the sites earn by fooling us.They either rob our money or time which is more precious.

I think the secret of SEO and increasing the site popularity is selfless give aways, helping and informing the readers, sharing our secrets without expecting anyting in return.
I think the secret of internet marketing lies in providing the readers whatever we have got in the best way we can.

1)Select a good time in a day when you can find liesure, when you think you can be more creative and start writing. Most of the Internet marketing gurus say that Writing and Informing continously of whatever you know helps in increasing our ranks at Google and other search engines.

2)Try to interact with the people on the internet.Dont just get mechanical but try to be friendly.Forget about the number of visitors, page rank,SEO,Google page rank etc while leaving a comment at another site.Select a topic which you are feeling to read at the moment.Leave a live and sensible comment.

3)Show your expertise and critical thinking.Dont get too selfish and dry.At the same time dont forget to leave a scent of professionalism in your words.

4)Unleash your creativity and be yourself.Dont get carried away with the author or with the comments of other readers.Mark your own style.

5)Be regular visitors to good sites which host lots of comments (like techchurch, google answers, yahoo answers, youtube videos, technorati etc).Being regular is very important. This marks your presence and earns you a recognition.
After being recognised at a place, slowly expand yourself without losing touch with older readers.
Try to forget about getting visitors to your site, increasing your page popularity etc all the way. These things give a selfish look to your modest and honest articles and comments. So try to avoid them in your brain while you are at other people's sites.
